As we age, injuries — particularly those caused by falls — can have a significant impact not only on individuals, but also on families, whānau, and communities.

Strength and balance programmes are widely recognised in New Zealand as an effective way to help reduce the risk of falls, improve confidence with everyday movement, and support older adults to remain active and independent for longer.

Stronger for Life has been designed around these same principles, with a focus on practical, achievable movement that supports strength, balance, and confidence in everyday life.

What You’ll Actually Do

Stronger for Life is simple and practical. Here’s what participants typically do each month:

1. Walk or move regularly
Choose a level that suits you and work towards a monthly walking or activity goal.

2. Follow simple strength and balance exercises
Complete guided exercises designed to help improve strength, stability, and confidence with everyday movement.

3. Track your progress
Use your personal Stronger for Life tracker to record your activity and see your progress build over the quarter.

All exercises can be done at home, at your own pace, with clear guidance provided.

How it Works

A Simple 3 Step Approach

Step 1

Choose your level

Each quarter, choose the level that feels right for you:

  • Beginner:
    15km per month (45km per quarter)
  • Intermediate:
    30km per month (90km per quarter)
  • Active:
    60km per month (180km per quarter)

You can walk, jog, or mix the two.
It’s not about speed — it’s about consistency.

Step 2

Follow the strength & balance exercises

You’ll be guided through 12 proven strength & balance
exercises
, including:

  • sit-to-stands
  • heel and toe raises
  • balance holds
  • hip strength
  • gentle core work

Each exercise includes:

  • ✔️ what to do
  • ✔️ why it matters
  • ✔️ recommended reps or time
